Pardon my ignorance but where does programming fit into the function of a robot? How are the controls for movement different than an analog remote control mechanism?

All of the code to control the robot is written by our programmers using Labview. The drivers operate it with x-box and joystick controllers, connected to the robot via wireless router, connected to the c-rio, the robot's on-board computer. We have many functions that it has to be programmed to perform, and we also have a ten-second autonomous period where the robot operates independently of human control. Our programmers have a lot of work to do to make sure the robot works.
Presumably battery powered, how long can Scar run effectively before needing recharge or pit stop for battery replacement in competition mode?
Scar runs on the FRC-required 12 volt battery. We have 5 and switch out between every 3-minute match. We could run longer, but it is better to make sure you have a fully charged battery each time.
